The Louisiana Supreme Court says a Shreveport woman convicted of second-degree murder in the death of her daughter is guilty of a lesser offense.
Satonia Small will be remanded to Caddo District Court to be sentenced on a charge of negligent homicide in connection with the death of her 6-year-old daughter in 2008.
Small was found guilty in September 2010 after leaving her daughter and 7-year-old son alone in their apartment in January 2008 to go out with friends. The building caught fire, trapping She'Je'Berne, who later died in a hospital. Small's son was injured but escaped the burning.
Small was sentenced in October 2010 to life in prison. The charge of negligent homicide carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
