A man who mistook his sister for a burglar faces charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, Caddo Parish sheriff's deputies said today. The relative who gave him the gun has also been arrested.
Michael Henderson was arrested at the southwest Caddo Parish home of his sister, who was shot and wounded Wednesday night.
Denise Giddens, 40, was shot in the stomach by her brother, who had been staying with his sister at her residence in the 8300 block of Godfrey Road, sheriff's deputies said. There had been an attempted break-in there earlier in the week and Henderson believed that person was looking for him, deputies said.
Henderson was sleeping with a gun, deputies said. He told investigators he got up during the night to check the locks on the doors, heard a noise and opened fire not knowing he was shooting his sister, deputies said.
Henderson's nephew, Kevin Giddens Jr., was arrested for giving Henderson the handgun knowing he was a convicted felon and thus prohibited from having a weapon, deputies said. Giddens was booked on charges of illegally supplying a felon with a firearm.
