The swarms of mayflies around parts of Shreveport today were due to mating season, an entomologist said.

The area around the Shreveport-Barksdale Bridge was covered with the insects this morning. Mayflies covered the road, light poles, and vehicles -- and a bicycle rider had to swat them as he rode across the bridge.

Entomologist Mike Hall said mayflies live most of their lives in the water but come out in large swarms during mating time.

"After mating, the female lays her eggs back in the water and then she dies shortly thereafter," Hall said.
