Safety is the top concern of the Shreveport Police Department as the parade season kicks into full gear.

Department officials say over the last several years there has been a decline in the number of arrest and incidents during parades, even though the number of people attending events continues to increase.

It's part of the reason why the department is not seeking the help of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Department this year.

Corporal Marcus Hines, with SPD, also says that over the last several years they have hired more officers and now have enough  to handle staffing issues.

Hines says the biggest problems they tend to have are people fighting over parking spots for their trailers and campers and kids being knocked over by adults as they try and catch beads.
