RUSTON -- A mother who went to move her SUV ran over and killed her 23-month-old daughter, who had slipped away from her step-father when he was distracted by a cell phone call, Ruston police said.

The accident happened Sunday evening at a house on West Georgia Avenue.

Police said the child's mother, Chastity Tucker, 32, had parked her Lincoln Navigator in the front yard and was listening to music while they cooked outside. Tucker's daughter was standing nearby with her step-father when the mother went to get in her vehicle and then began to pull forward.

Tucker told officers she heard her vehicle hit something, got out and saw her daughter lying next to the vehicle, police said.

The step-father, Daniel Arenas-Arroyo said he had gotten a cell phone call and did not see the child leave his side.

The little girl, whose named was not made public, was airlifted to LSU Hospital in Shreveport but died.
