BATON ROUGE (AP) -- Louisiana education officials say no major changes are planned for the state's promotion exam for fourth- and eighth-graders, although some lawmakers want it changed.

The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program exam, which fourth- and eighth-graders have to pass to move to the fifth and ninth grades, is a major part of Louisiana's bid to improve public schools.

It has come under repeated fire from some lawmakers, but state Education Superintendent Paul Pastorek has all but dismissed prospects for sweeping changes -- including efforts to repeal the rule that requires students to pass LEAP for promotion to the next grade.
