Bossier City Police Chief Mike Halphen presented an officer yesterday with the Police Department’s Life Saving Bar for resuscitating a heart attack victim with an automated external defibrillator earlier this month. Officer Roy Short received the award at this afternoon’s Bossier City Council meeting.
Officer Short was honored for his actions during an incident that occurred on August 3 at St. Jude Catholic Church in the 3800 block of Viking Drive. On that date, officer Short responded to a 911 Hang Up call at the church. Upon arriving he learned a 75-year old man had suffered an apparent heart attack and was unresponsive without a pulse. Despite attempts of CPR by another person, the man remained unresponsive at which time officer Short retrieved the automated external device, or AED, from his patrol car and attached it to the victim. Upon being prompted by the AED, Officer Short administered three shocks to the victim at which time the man began breathing and regained a pulse and was taken to a local hospital.
Bossier City police officers are certified in the use of automated external defibrillators. AED’s are kept in all patrol cars and detective vehicles and are ready for immediate use.
Officer Short has been a member of the Bossier City Police Department for two years.
