One Class at a Time for April 20, 2012
Thanks to a One Class at a Time grant, some local students can once again participate in a rocket launch activity that had been scrubbed because of program budgetary cuts.
Lauren Warren teaches 5th grade at R.V. Kerr Elementary School in Bossier Parish.
She says every year, her students looked forward to launching rockets as an outdoor activity.
"We have a lot of military-based kids, so they really enjoy it."
Warren says because of the affiliation with Barksdale Airforce Base, her students enjoy engineering and aeronautic-type activities.
Budget cuts had recently eliminated their annual rocket launch, but now, she can provide the launch on her own, because she got a big check.
Warren says thanks to KTBS 3 and the One Class at a Time sponsors, she'll be able to purchase the activity, rocket launchers, to engage her fifth graders.
She says this will broaden the students' grasp of newton's laws of motion.
"When they're able to see a rocket launch, they're able to see what happens to push that rocket up, and gravity is pushing back down on it, and they're able to see it up close," said Warren.
