When you look at a painting  do you ever ask yourself, " What's going on in this picture?"

Well that's the question students at Sun City Elementary ask each other every month when teacher Joan Pingel displays the work of a great artist.

Pingel says when started asking students what they saw in the painting she noticed how creative her students were so she asked them to start writing about what they saw resulting in better writing skills.

She then thought of a way to turn those writing skills into artistic expressions and she introduced painting to her students but there was a small glitch in her plan, the school doesn't have an art program.

For the last few months she has managed to pay for paint and paper anyway she can but money was getting pretty short.  So Pingel decided to apply for a "One Class at a Time Grant." And she won.

She now plans to buy plenty of paint and paper for students to express their creative side.

And each month when the students have completed their writing assignment and painting their own version of what they see in the featured painting of the month their works of art go on display in the halls of Sun City for everyone to see.
