A man who, in some ways may have helped save the planet, was honored by his alma mater.

Bob Scivalley, Byrd high school class of 1946, was among those honored at the annual Byrd hall of fame luncheon.

Scivalley was on the team of engineers who invented the catalytic converter during the 1970's.

It's now required on virtually every car or truck sold in North America and Europe.

He was one of six Byrd alumni honored for achievements that ranged from water colorist to oil and gas exploration to pioneers in kidney dialysis.
