BOSSIER CITY, La. -

The local American Cancer Society 'Painted the Town Purple' today to kick off the "Relay for Life" season.

The Bossier City relay organizers were informing shoppers and taking donations in front of Dillards in Pierre Bossier Mall.

Participants received a decorative purple bow for $10 and were encouraged to sign up for the relay.

All proceeds from today's fundraiser and the relay help local cancer victims.

"We're all volunteers here. We're all participating with our residents. The money that we raise helps the Bossier citizens and provides events like the wig and makeup training, when they're going through chemotherapy. It also provides transportation. Some people can't get to their cancer treatments so we want to make sure we get them there," says Michell Curtis, with the Bossier Relay for Life.

The American Cancer Society says you can sign up for the relay on their Facebook page.
