Shreveport, La -

A man who was allegedly walking on a major thoroughfare early this morning was struck by a vehicle and later died as a result of his injuries.

It happened just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning in the 1800 block of Spring Street in Shreveport. Police say a concerned caller contacted authorities about a man having almost been hit by a vehicle.

Moments later, with patrolmen en route, officials say Shreveport Police received another call reporting that a man walking in the roadway had been stuck by a car.

Police say that car was driven by 50-year-old Gwendolyn Brown of Shreveport, who underwent mandatory chemical testing for intoxication at police headquarters. Those tests came back negative.

The pedestrian was taken to LSU Health Shreveport, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe Brown was driving on the inside lane of Spring Street and did not see the man until he was illuminated by a street light and was unable to avoid hitting him.

No charges have been filed and the man's identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.
