While the United States continues to wrestle with the worst food inflation in 17 years, one Ark-La-Tex corrections facility is not having to worry about the rising prices.

The reason, they grow their own crops. Every day the inmates farm 35 acres of land at the Bossier Parish Minimum Security facility also known as the "penal farm" near Plain Dealing. The inmates grow everything from peas to tomatoes. All these crops are grown, harvested then fed to the inmates at all three facilities in Bossier Parish.

"We save we estimate $35,000 at year by growing our own," said Lt. Ed Baswell, Bossier Sheriff's Department.

Over the past 13 years they've saved taxpayers about $455,000 dollars.
