At the last Drug Take-Back event in April, Americans turned in more than 550 thousand pounds of unwanted and or unused medications.
800 pounds came from Sheriff's Safety Town in Shreveport- the largest in collection Louisiana.
Organizers say they participate for a couple of reasons. When people flush old pills down the drain, it can contaminate the water supply. Also, studies show that most abused Rx drugs come from family and friends, many times taken from home medicine cabinets.
Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday, Sept. 29.
