KILLEEN, Texas -

A Central Texas volunteer with the American Red Cross is accused of making false claims that bilked the disaster relief agency out of more than $117,000.

Killeen police say David Allen Gilg III was arrested Tuesday and charged with theft over $100,000, a second-degree felony. He will remain jailed in Killeen until his arraignment Wednesday, when a bail amount will be set.

Authorities say Gilg made 84 fictitious claims this year by the time the investigation started last month. Each was between $1,000 and $2,000.

The 25-year-old had been a Red Cross volunteer for more than seven years. Authorities say he kept the debit card issued for the claim amount, then withdrew the money and kept it.
