BOSSIER CITY, La. -

As the gun control debate rages on nationwide, Rep. Jeff Thompson (Dist. 8) says he's looking to protect the 2nd Amendment rights of Louisiana residents.

The Bossier City republican launched Defend Louisiana, a petition that he hopes will spark legislation with a few goals: protect Louisiana gun owners from federal intrusion; penalize those who publish the names of concealed carry permit holders; enhance school safety and; raise awareness of lawful gun ownership and of gun safety and celebrate the hunting traditions of Louisiana families.

Last year Louisiana voters approved a constitutional amendment that requires the most stringent standards be used by the courts when determining whether regulations infringe on Second Amendment rights. Thompson says that's a good first step in making sure "People that are responsible, law abiding citizens are not infringed upon protecting their families and enjoying the outdoors, but that we also raise awareness to make sure that children are safe around firearms."
