SHREVEPORT, La. -

One of the busiest streets in Shreveport, Line Avenue (LA 523), cuts right through the heart of the city.

Near one stretch of Line Avenue, from E. 70th Street to E. 85th Street, there are three schools, two nursing homes, a library and a lot of pedestrian traffic. Even so, that stretch of Line Avenue has a speed limit of 45 m.p.h.

"And that stretch from 70th to the Cedar Grove Library in my opinion is the most residential, pedestrian packed stretch of Line Avenue," said Shreveport resident Larry Russo.

Russo has contacted the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development about the issue, which he says jeopardizes public safety. Russo says the issue came up during an MBA ethics class at Centenary College regarding public policy.

"Why would you have a 10 m.p.h. difference between north of 70th and south of 70th, when south of 70th is much more filled with pedestrians, cyclists and the like?" Russo asked.

Caddo Parish Commissioner Lindora Baker agrees: "So it's a lot of foot traffic and people are actually crossing the street where basically you have drivers who are driving possibly 10 m.p.h. higher than the speed limit, going maybe 55 or 60 m.p.h."

By request, LADOTD is in the process of completing a traffic study on Line Avenue. Those results should be available in the coming weeks.
