U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise has easily defeated four challengers in his bid to keep the congressional seat representing suburban New Orleans.
Scalise, a Republican from Metairie, had no well-financed opposition for the 1st District seat in Tuesday's election.
His four opponents included one he'd defeated twice -- Democrat Vinny Mendoza of Ponchatoula. Also running for the seat were Gary King, a Republican from New Orleans; David "Turk" Turknett, an independent from Galliano; and Arden Wells, an independent from Ponchatoula.
Scalise, a former state lawmaker, was first elected to Congress in 2008.
The 1st District covers suburban New Orleans and coastal southeast Louisiana.
