University Elementary is the largest elementary school in Caddo Parish when it comes to student population. The school has just over a thousand students.

Principal Paula Nelson says keeping them all protected is her biggest concern. She knows every twist, turn, corner and corridor of the school.

As she walked the halls of the school with KTBS 3 News, she told us about the different buildings and how all doors are kept locked.  She says  since the shooting at Sandy Hook she has examined, re-examined, and examined again, the details of her school security plan.

It was during a drill at the school, that it was discovered that one of the doors of a first grade classrooms didn't locked. It was quickly fixed. Nelson says she is always looking for ways to improve campus security.

Over the summer, the school will have a new camera system installed. More than 100 cameras will be placed around the school. And a new identification system is currently being used for PTA members and will soon be used for substitute teachers.
