Searchers today battled bad weather and strong river currents as they continued looking for two young people missing and presumed drowned after an overloaded fishing boat sank in the Red River in Red River Parish on Thursday.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Four others who were in the boat swam to safety, Sheriff Johnny Ray Norman said.

Missing are a 15-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man.

The accident happened about 1 a.m. near the Red River bridge outside Coushatta. Norman said the group had just put the boat into the river to go fishing and were about 75 yards from shore when it began to sink.

Norman said it appeared the overloaded boat and the swift river current were factors in the accident.
