Secretary of State Jay Dardenne is recommending Louisiana's congressional primaries be rescheduled for Oct. 4 due to the damage caused by Hurricane Gustav.

The election was supposed to happen Saturday, but Gov. Bobby Jindal agreed with Dardenne's recommendation to postpone the election. There are widespread power outages in Louisiana and many would-be voters are displaced.

Jindal must approve the rescheduled date.

The decision will affect four of the state's seven congressional districts, including Northwest Louisiana's 4th Congressional District race. The 4th District race, which includes strong candidates from both Republican and Democratic parties, might not be decided until December if there are runoffs.

The U.S. Justice Department must also approve election day changes.
