BATON ROUGE, La. -

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- The Louisiana Senate has shelved a proposal that would have stopped former lawmakers from boosting their retirement pay by getting a job with a state agency after leaving office.
The proposal by Baton Rouge Sen. Dan Claitor would prohibit any former members of the Legislature from participating in the state retirement system. Any former lawmaker who is currently in the state retirement system would be treated like his state employment ends on June 30, for determination of benefits.
Claitor's bill would only affect a handful of lawmakers, since legislators elected since 1997 were barred from the state pension system.
The Senate voted 36-3 for a procedural move Wednesday that stopped debate on the bill, stalling it on the calendar.
