A Shreveport homeowner is in jail after police say he shot a man who was threatening his daughter with a gun. Police say Steven Crain told them he was asleep inside his house on Driftwood Circle when he woke up to someone screaming and yelling. When he went outside his room, he found his old college friend, arguing with his teenaged daughter.

Officer Christian Hicks says Crain chased his friend, Dax Gable, 38, out of the house and into the front yard where Crain shot him once in the backside. Gable drove himself to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Detective Rod Demery says once Gable leaves the hospital, he'll be booked into jail for aggravated assault. Crain was booked for aggravated battery. In most cases, a homeowner would be justified in shooting an armed intruder, but not in this case.

Demery says Crain shot Gable as Gable was trying to get in his vehicle and leave, so there was no immediate threat.

Hicks says had police been called on that, it's possible they wouldn't have been called on this.

Police say there were several witnesses to the shooting. Most of them were kids who had just gotten home from school.
