SHREVEPORT, La. -

Shreveport Police Chief Willie Shaw and Mayor Cedric Glover on Wednesday released the city's 2012 crime statistics. The differences from the previous year were not drastic.

11,451 Part One crimes were reported in 2012. That's 192 more than in 2011, an increase of about two percent. There were 20 homicides reported in both years. But there was a slight increase in all violent crimes of about one percent in 2012.

"Even in a 2% gain year, you have to go back to 1975 to find a year lower than we just had," said Chief Shaw. "So we're still fighting the good fight and we're still holding the numbers."

Chief Shaw says the city has seen significant improvements in keeping crime numbers low since the 1990's. 24,619 Part One crimes were reported in the city of Shreveport in 1994.

Mayor Glover says when he ran for his position, he promised to address public safety.

"And so we started literally from day one to marshal as many resources as we could to help us effectively address and impact this problem," Mayor Glover said.

So far in 2013 four homicides have been recorded. There have been arrests in three of those cases.
