Greg Colston, the 17-year-old Parkway High School student who was the victim of a triple murder by his mother's enraged ex-husband, was remembered today as a bright and talented student-athlete who was a team player on the basketball court.
Colston, who died this afternoon after being removed from life support, will receive a special remembrance this evening when Parkway's senior class holds its awards ceremony. It will be at Bellaire Baptist Church.
Colston was set to graduate from high school a week from Saturday.
"Everybody is devastated," Parkway Assistant Principal Nichole Bourgeois said of Colston's classmates. "They're really in a state of shock."
Today is supposed to be a day of studying for seniors, who start final exams on Wednesday. But for many, there were tears and hugs as classmates and teachers consoled each other.
"He's an awesome person. It doesn't get any better, I promise you," friend Brittney Dukes said of Colston. "He smiles all the time. He's not mean to anybody."
Colston played on Parkway's basketball team, despite being 5-foot-7, and had a 3.7 grade-point average. He was described as a solid student and competitive athlete.
"He always made me smile," Dukes recalled. "I could be mad at the world and he could make me smile a little."
Colston planned to enroll at Northwestern State University in the fall, friends said.
