State Police Use Lasers To Catch Speeders
Doppler Radar Is Becoming A Thing Of The Past
Louisiana State Police officers are cracking down on speeders thanks to the some newer radar technology.
LIDAR uses a narrow laser beam that computes speed using the simple change of position over a time formula.
The LIDAR works better than the more common version of doppler radar which shoots a signal out across a wide field, hits an object then bounces the signal back. LIDAR allows officers to shoot at one vehicle.
"It only gets that object. No other object can interfere with it because it's going to go all the way until it hits the object you're pointing at," said Trooper Matt Harris.
Harris says LIDAR has proven very successful on interstates where officers aren't able to safely get out of their vehicles to run radar.
"What this detail is for is to gain compliance with the speeding laws and cuts down on our fatality and serious injury crashes," said Harris.
