The latest on a dangerous drug circulating in the Texarkana area.

The Bi-State Narcotics Task Force (BSNTF) has recently determined that the highly dangerous drug is called Phenazepam.

According to the Arkansas State Health Department, Phenazepam, a synthetic drug developed in the Soviet Union, is used to treat neurological disorders such as epilepsy, mimics the effects of Xanax and is extremely dangerous.

Side effects of taking Phenazepam are listed as dizziness, loss of coordination, amnesia, severe anxiety, seizures, convulsions and even death.

These side effects are worsened when combined with alcohol.

Investigators say the drug has been circulating the Texarkana area for weeks now and resembles a Xanax pill. Police say individuals have been illegally purchasing or receiving this drug from friends or associates on the street.

The Arkansas Attorney General has issued a ban on Phenazepam due to the severe medical problems it causes.

The BSNTF will continue this investigation and will actively follow up on any and all leads to determine the person(s) responsible for distributing these drugs in the Texarkana area.

Anyone found in possession of this illegal drug will face criminal charges, up to a felony classification.
