The Red River is a great source for recreation and navigation. It's also the perfect breeding ground for the "Least Tern" a migratory bird on the endangered species list.
Mr. Hubert Hervey has been watching the birds since 1996.
Hervey says he began his survey of the Least Terns as a matter of love and concern. Now his concern for the birds have turned to the future of the red river.
Hervey been fighting to save this bird and is concerned that new talks about adding more locks and dams to the river could destroy more of the Tern's habitat.
But Caddo Parish Administrator Woody Wilson says this new lock and dam position between here and Texarkana would be a great benefit for everyone that uses the river.
Mr. Hervey says the higher water will change the make-up of the sand bars making the Least Tern easier prey.
According to Mr. Hervey the birds may soon go off the endangered species list because of their growing numbers.
