Three more names have been added to the list of women honored for their community service by the Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s Commission.

The winners received their awards at a recent reception at the Barnwell Center. The recognition is designed for ``unsung heroines’’ whose visions and voices have improved the quality of life through their effective advocacy and leadership.

The honorees for 2012 are:

Anika Parsons – Advocacy
The nomination letter described Parsons as deeply compassionate and committed to developing partnerships to establish programs that enhance the quality of life for Shreveport residents. She established iNception for youth and adults to funnel their creativity with words through expressions and a new appreciation for poetry.

Sandra Lee Ratliff – Education
Ms. Ratliff’s goal is to raise awareness of the rich cultural diversity our city possesses. As President and Community liaison with the PTA, she has secured equipment for schools, established annual scholarship awards and conducted various workshops ranging from math literacy to childhood obesity.

Mary Alice Rountree – Quality of Life
Mrs. Rountree is known for her tireless devotion to Meals on Wheels and to seniors. She is a dedicated fundraiser determined to establish programs that improve life for seniors and maintain the high level of service that our area senior citizens deserve.

The HERA Awards were instituted in 2008 under the leadership of Mayor Cedric Glover. Hera was the Greek goddess of women. HERA stands for Helpful, Responsible, Effective
