Tropical Storm Fay was hugging the east coast of Florida just north of Cape Canaveral, Fla., today with forecasters watching to see if it turns toward the Gulf of Mexico.

It had not moved out over the Atlantic Ocean, where forecasters have said there's a chance it could strengthen and curve back toward the state as a hurricane. Forecasters are expecting Fay to turn to the west later today, and she could move back into the gulf on Friday. Another landfall could happen along the the Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama Gulf Coast Sunday.

Forecasters this morning said the storm's center could stay inland in Florida until this afternoon, making it less likely that it ever becomes a hurricane. Top winds are 50 mph.

A hurricane watch is still in effect for parts of north Florida and Georgia.

A tropical storm warning has been extended, covering an area from north of Jupiter Inlet to an area about halfway between Jacksonville, Fla., and Savannah, Ga.
