Tyler, Texas -

A sport utility vehicle taking 10 children to a water park veered out of control and overturned on an East Texas interstate highway, killing five children and injuring the other seven occupants of the vehicle.

The crash happened about 2:15 p.m. Monday on Interstate 20 near the town of Van, about 70 miles east of Dallas.

Texas DPS officials told KTBS that 12 people were traveling in a GMC Envoy, which was only designed to hold eight people, when a rear tire blew out. The SUV went off the road to the right before it overturned. Ten people were ejected.

KYTX in Tyler confirmed Monday night that five children were killed as a result of the crash.

Investigators say there were no child safety seats being used.
