UPDATE: Mother re-sentenced in daughter's death; released from prison

A woman, whose second-degree murder conviction in the 2008 fire death of her 6-year-old daughter was overturned, has been re-sentenced to five years for negligent homicide.
However, because Caddo District Court Judge Mike Pitman gave her credit for time served, she was then released from state custody.
Satonia Small was originally sentenced to life in prison in 2010 until the state Supreme Court ruled in October that the case did not merit the second-degree murder charge.
Small had left her daughter and 7-year-old son alone in their apartment in January 2008 to go out with friends. The building caught fire, trapping the daughter, She'Je'Berne. Small's son was injured but escaped the fire.
The high court concluded that the mother may have been negligent in her conduct but that the child's death was not the result of a direct act by Small. The case was sent back to Caddo Parish District Court  for sentencing.
