Veterans home honors local Pearl Harbor survivors

BOSSIER CITY, La. -

The Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Bossier City took time to honor two local residents who survived the Pearl Harbor attack 71 years ago today.

James Metcalf and Kenneth Robert Barns both served in the U.S. Navy during the time Pearl Habor was bombed by the Japanese.

They were honored with a special observance ceremony at the veterans home.

Barns says he remembers jumping into action to try and save his fellow sailers right after the attack.

"After the ship was sunk, I got a whale boat and picked up survivors that were in the water. Some of them had oil on them. Some of them had a little bit of burns."

The surprise attack killed about 2,400 people and brought the United States into World War II.
