Metairie, La. -

U.S. Sen. David Vitter announced today that the Economic Development Administration (EDA), a bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has awarded three disaster relief grants in Louisiana totaling $4 million.
The Greater Baton Rouge Port Commission has been awarded $1,000,000 to rebuild the rail lines connecting Port Allen’s Inland Rivers Marine Terminal, allowing it to stay open during future storms and keep business operating.
The St. Mary Parish Levee District and Terrebonne Parish Levee and Conservation District has been awarded $1,800,000 to help improve flood control in south central Louisiana and help expand business in industries such as shipbuilding, seafood, oil and gas.
Shreveport has been awarded $1,200,000 to build storm drainage infrastructure for a film industry back lot. The EDA estimates that this investment will create 50 jobs and encourage $5 million in private investment in the area.
“As Louisianians well know, unexpected storms and severe flooding can cause sudden damage throughout the state. These grants will help local industries rebuild and make necessary preparations for future storms,” Vitter said. “These investments will help local businesses attract and expand jobs for Louisianians.”
The grants are funded through the EDA’s FY 2012 Disaster Relief Opportunity, which supports long-term recovery through job creation and private investment.
