With temperatures warming up, more people are gearing up to get their motorcycle out of the garage and take a spin. But knowing the rules on the road can mean the difference between life and death.

Saturday morning William M. Hudnall, 27, of Bossier City died in a motorcycle crash. Police believe he was speeding and lost control of his bike near I-220 and I-20.

Less than 24 hours later, there was another motorcycle accident in Bossier. This one sent the driver to the hospital. Authorities say he was weaving in and out of traffic in an attempt to beat a red light when he collided with a car.

Statistics show in 2006, nearly 5,000 motorcyclists were killed and an estimated 88,000 were injured while riding. Officials hope to decrease the number of fatalities and accidents. Which is why they're trying to bring awareness to the problem.

In fact, this month is dedicated to motorcycle awareness safety.

"Although motorcycles have improved greatly over the years, skills haven't. It's important for people to be aware of what it takes to ride a motorcycle safely, how to break, swerve, use advasive techniques and be mentally aware of hazards," said Edward Patterson, Instructor.

To insure safety while riding on the roadways experts recommend motorcyclists perform a safety inspection on their bikes before riding long distances, wear protective clothing, pay close attention to signals and break lights and watch your speed.

But bike riders like Philip Underhill are asking motorists to also do their part.

"Just watch out for us. We have the same rights to be on the road. We hope to provide the same respects to drivers and we kind of like the same in turn," said Underhill.
