A new kind of homework in Atlanta, Texas

Teachers used to assign a chapter to read in a book as homework.

At Atlanta, Texas, Independent School District, teachers still make those assignments -- but now they're going to be on a laptop computer, not a textbook.

It's a new way of learning for seventh through 12th graders. Each student now has his or her own MacBook laptop issued to them.

Students can also e-mail questions to teachers.

The computers were bought through a pair of $500,000 grants from the state.

"In 37 years of being in education, it's the greatest thing I've ever seen happen to education because it's engaged all of our students and set the hook," Atlanta Middle School Principal Rex Stone said.

Teachers also have laptops and the lessons will be taught using the computers.

"I like that we don't have to write like all the notes. In English, we were always taking notes," eighth-grader Alyssa Oliver said.

School district officials said filters have been placed on each of the computers to keep students from looking at inappropriate material on the internet.
