Eighty-seven dogs and six cats, living in what investigators call deplorable conditions, have been seized at a puppy mill in Panola County, Texas.

Investigators said charges are pending against the owner.

A state veterinarian who was at the scene on Thursday as the dogs, puppies and cats were seized by authorities, said the dogs had all kinds of diseases and several had mange. They were kept in cages in a building and were covered with feces, he said.

Panola sheriff's investigators said they got a tip from Houston, where the animals were being sold to breeders and pet stores.

Investigators said the conditions were so bad, they had to wear safety gear.

"My officers tried to use all the precautions to keep from being exposed to bacteria. We had a lot of gas masks out there, but it was still overpowering," Panola Chief Deputy Sheriff David Jeter said.

The animals have been sent to the Humane Society in Houston, which will try to get them all adopted.

Mark a big win for the animals, I'm sure that if more investigation goes on there will be other puppy mills found. I do a lot of work out in the various counties and parishes of east Texas ans Louisiana and have seen numerous starved and abused animals.

This is why people should never buy a puppy from a pet store!  It just supports this kind of cruelty.  So sad that people try to make a buck off these innocent creatures and neglect their basic needs in the process.

Yee-Haa, Texas. If enough people step up, all of those bastards will be out of business.
