Caddo Parish School Board members today called for more oversight in the use of recruiting companies to help find foreign teachers to work here.
They were expected to approve that in a meeting today.
Board members said they did not know in advance that school system administrators had gone to the Philippines to recruit teachers.
Forty-three Filipino teachers were hired to deal with shortages in some hard-to-fill positions in Caddo Parish. A state teachers union has complained that the recruiting company that found the teachers charged them exorbitantly high fees to bring them to Caddo Parish and other school systems in Louisiana. Large amounts have been withheld from the teachers' paychecks, the union said.
Caddo's School Board is expected to approve a new policy that would require administrators to seek board approval to use a recruiter for teachers coming from other countries. The plan also would require administrators to present documentation to support why they chose a particular recruiter or recruiting company.
