The president of Centenary College said Tuesday he wants to phase out half of the school's academic programs over the next three to four years, with corresponding cuts in faculty and staff.
Centenary President David Rowe said he will recommend to the Board of Trustees that the college phase out 22 of its 44 majors once students currently enrolled in those programs graduate.
Programs that are expected to be phased out include German, Latin, elementary and secondary education, music performance and accounting.
The private liberal arts college averages an enrollment of 800 to 900 students each year. Rowe said Centenary needs to streamline its focus.
"Centenary has a history of trying to serve a lot of different interests with very few resources," he said. "We've been spreading our resources quite thin. This is going to give us an opportunity to focus our resources on a few things that we believe we can do extremely well."
Centenary's Board of Trustees will have a special meeting this spring to consider Rowe's recommendations

Mr. Rowe is going to destroy this great school before anyone stops him. It started with the athletic program, now academics, it's a real shame for such a great school.

Why don't you pony up the $ to stop this?
