The Shreveport City Council has decided to hold off conducting its own investigation into alleged corruption at the city's Department of Community Development.

The council had said earlier that it planned to conduct an investigation into the case -- on top of a criminal investigation by the Caddo Sheriff's Department and the Caddo district attorney, and a separate review by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's inspector general.

Council Chairman Ron Webb, who met with the sheriff to discuss a council investigation, said he decided to postpone any council probe, which would have been headed up by a local attorney chosen by the council.

"A lot of phone calls; a lot of talking, praying; and I feel very comfortable with the decision I made," Webb said today. "I think it's going to be in the best interests of everybody."

The council voted unanimously to postpone an investigation until an internal audit they ordered is complete.

The Sheriff's Department is continuing its investigation of Community Development.

Three city inspectors and four contractors who did housing-rehabilitation work were arrested last week. The contractors are accused of charging the city for work that was substandard or that wasn't done. The inspectors, who have been fired, are accused of signing off that the work had been done properly.
