A contractor in Bossier Parish has been accused of defrauding three families who hired him to build swimming pools at their homes. The victims paid in advance for work that was substandard, authorities said.

Randy Mason, who worked for Ocean Reef Pools, was booked into the Bossier Parish jail today on three counts of contractor misapplication of funds.

Bossier sheriff's investigators said three families who hired Mason earlier this year are out thousands of dollars due to the amount of money it would take to fix the pools, two of which are unusable.

The charges allege Mason was paid by his customers but failed to pay subcontractors. The homeowners have been sued by the subcontractors, who are trying to get paid.

Sam Harrell and Maria Sutton said they were told they could get their pools installed in less than two weeks. Laura McFerrin said her pool cost $28,000 and is riddled with problems. And Sam and Stephanie Harrell said they paid $22,000 for their pool, but there were problems with its stability from the start.

Each of the families say it will cost them more than $20,000 to repair their pools, which they can't afford.

Bankruptcy court records show Mason has filed for bankruptcy protection from his creditors.

Efforts to reach Mason before his arrest were unsuccessful.
