A natural gas well blowout in DeSoto Parish has been capped and residents who live in the vicinity of it were allowed to return home this morning.
Residents could check in at the DeSoto Sheriff's Department in Mansfield beginning at 8 a.m. and were escorted one-by-one to their homes, where law officers and representatives from the Department of Environmental Quality checked the air quality to make sure there was no lingering gas, DeSoto sheriff's Lt. Toni Morris said.
A wild-well crew from Boots and Coots got control of the well Thursday evening, Morris said.
The blowout near Grand Cane on Wednesday morning killed one man and critically injured another. They worked for a transportation company and were part of a six-man crew at the wellhead for routine maintenance.
Residents of 15 homes in the vicinity were evacuated.
Killed was James Dennis, 58, of Bullard, Texas. Co-worker Jimmy Siler, 30, of Bullard was injured.
The cause of the accident has not been disclosed.
Five DeSoto firefighters who went in to rescue the workers were treated and released for respiratory problems.
