Evacuation advisory issued for parts of south Bossier Parish

Authorities today issued an evacuation advisory for far south Bossier Parish as rain-swollen Red Chute Bayou and Loggy Bayou continued to flood the area.

The extremely high level of the Red River, which is fed by Red Chute and Loggy, is preventing proper drainage and is causing water to back up in parts of south Bossier Parish.

The evacuation advisory is for people living south of Louisiana 154 and Louisiana 157 -- which intersect east of Elm Grove -- south to Loggy Bayou Bridge and west to the Red River, authorities said.

Sandbagging continued today along Sligo Road and Louisiana 157, Bossier Sheriff Larry Deen said. A staging area for sandbagging has been set up at Elm Grove school and high-water vehicles and boats are in place for people who need help leaving, Deen said.

Water in south Bossier will keep backing up until the Red goes down, Deen said. The river level this morning was slowly falling.

"We have never tried to instill fear in anybody. We are just stating the facts," Bossier City Fire Chief Sammy Halphen said at an 11 a.m. news conference today.

The high-water situation continues to improved in northeast Bossier City, where a densely populated residential area was threatened over the weekend by Red Chute. The levee, heavily reinforced by sandbagging that has been underway for nearly a week, was still holding and authorities were "cautiously optimistic" the levee would hold.

"We're holding steady," said Halphen, who said Red Chute had not crested.

Red Chute has overtopped the bridge running from Bossier City to Dogwood subdivision. It has also overtopped its levee in several areas of south Bossier Parish.
