Grambling State University president Horace Judson announced today he is resigning, citing family reasons.
Judson has been the target of complaints from students upset about the six-figure fence erected around the president's house while classrooms and dorms needed improvements. Students, who had circulated a recall petition, also said he was inaccessible.
Judson, who has been president of the North Louisiana college for five years, will leave effective Oct. 31.
"When I began as president at GSU, I made a commitment to serve for five years," Judson said in a statement. "The extraordinary progress that has been achieved in every facet at GSU over the past five years has been validated. I believe that this is a good juncture for me to complete my tenure and focus on my family."
Judson earlier had told officials of the University of Louisiana system that he wanted to explore other career options.
"We were hopeful he would be able to stay on through the semester and are saddened that a close family member's illness accelerated his decision," university system President Randy Moffett said.
The University of Louisiana System board has a meeting scheduled Oct. 23 in Baton Rouge and plans to discuss the Grambling opening, the system said in a statement today.
