The Miller County, Ark., judge who presided in child custody hearings involving parents within jailed evangelist Tony Alamo's ministry died Sunday.

Judge Jim Hudson, 54, had been admitted to a Little Rock hospital five weeks ago for removal of a cancerous area in his small intestines. He later developed an infection from the procedure and never fully recovered.

Hudson is one of two judges who have presided over the child-custody cases to determine whether the children would remain in the custody of the state or be returned to their parents, who were followers of Alamo. Some of Alamo's followers also decided to go to jail rather than say where their children are. Thirty-six children have been taken into state custody.

Miller Circuit Court Judge Ted Capeheart will temporarily take over Hudson's caseload until Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe appoints another judge.

Hudson was elected a state district judge in 1991. He was recently nominated for a federal judgeship.
