The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System surgery is typically performed laparoscopically. First, the surgeon makes small incisions on the abdomen to insert long, thin surgical instruments. Then the laparoscope is placed through the incision near the belly button. A laparoscope is a tool with a light and a tiny camera that sends a picture to a nearby monitor. While all surgery is serious, laparoscopy can be performed more quickly, and is less invasive and less traumatic than conventional surgery. It also has fewer risks and generally a faster recovery time than open procedures.
The LAP-BAND® System creates a new, small upper stomach pouch and leaves the larger part of the stomach below. This new upper pouch can only hold a small amount of food, so you will feel full sooner. The LAP-BAND® System also controls the outlet between the two parts of the stomach and regulates the flow of the food from the upper to the lower part. The size of the outlet will help control your appetite so you are not hungry between meals. Reduction in food intake will result in weight loss.
