In this operation, a partition is contructed across the upper stomach to form two chambers; the upper chamber being only 50cc. This is equivalent to two ounces, two tablespoons, or the size of a very small egg. This upper chamber then empties into the lower stomach.
The partition is constructed by actually stapling the front wall of the stomach to the back wall with tiny staples of surgical stainless steel 4.8 mm long. The size of the pouch is accurately measured, and the diameter of the opening is approximately the size of a dime. The staples are carefully sutured in place to minimize the chance of the opening stretching out of shape. A band of special surgical silastic tubing further reinforces the outlet.
When the tiny upper stomach is full (and this occurs after a small amount of food), the patient experiences a sense of extreme fullness. The food eaten by the patient is digested and absorbed normally.
