The tornado that cut across Shreveport-Bossier City last Thursday was among 22 twisters in the ArkLaTex that afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

The strongest of the tornadoes happened about 4 p.m. and went from downtown Shreveport to near Cypress Lake in Bossier Parish. It was on the ground for 13 miles and 17 minutes, the Weather Service said after a survey of the affected areas. The tornadoes either touched down or skipped along an area and snapped trees in half.

The tornado that occurred early that afternoon at Princeton in Bossier Parish injured eight people, none seriously, authorities said.

Tornadoes were recorded from Gary City, Texas, to southern Arkansas. Most were in Northwest Louisiana. The first one hit near Princeton and the last one was in Emerson, Ark.

GreenAcres Place subdivision and neighboring Brownlee in Bossier City took the brunt of the storm, which was at its strongest there. It was carrying winds of up to 115 mph and was 600 yards wide. A lightning strike started a fire that destroyed four town homes in GreenAcres Place. The tornado moved across Airline Drive, damaging an apartment complex and several neighborhoods. More than 100 homes in Bossier were damaged.

One man was killed when his car crashed into a tree that had been blown across a road near Vivian in north Caddo Parish.

Another man was injured when the tornado toppled the steeple of First United Methodist Church in downtown Shreveport. The steeple landed on top of Michael Williams' car as he drove in front of the church.

Four tornadoes were verified in Caddo Parish; three in Bossier Parish; and three in Magnolia, Ark., the Weather Service said.

The tornado that hit Princeton was on the ground for 2.5 miles and three minutes.

When the tornado was in downtown Shreveport, it blew windows out of buildings, damaged the Convention Center and blew tiles off the YMCA.
