The shooting happened shortly before 6 p.m. at Kings Manor apartments in the 7200 block of Berstein Avenue.
Police Cpl. Bill Goodin said a young man went to the apartment of an acquaintance, knocked on the door and tried to rob him. Both had guns and they started shooting at each other, police said.
The wound-be robber was shot three times in the chest. The intended robbery victim was not hurt, Goodin said.
The man in the apartment was taken in for questioning late this afternoon. No charges were immediately filed.
