Man killed when car crashes into fallen tree

A motorist was killed in north Caddo Parish Thursday night when his car crashed into a tree that had fallen across the road.

 The accident happened on Louisiana 170 just outside Vivian.

 Caddo sheriff's deputies said the accident happened about 7 p.m. during a heavy rain storm. The pine tree was completely across the road and the young man's car hit it, shearing off the top of the Ford Taurus.

  Two more cars crashed into the tree moments later, deputies said. Two people walked away from the accidents; a third was taken to the hospital with what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

 The name of the man who was killed had not been released Thursday night pending notification of family.

  Earlier in the day, one person was critically injured when a pickup went out of control on rain-slick Louisiana 1 in Oil City and was hit broadside by an oncoming SUV. The pickup wound up in a ditch and caught fire. The driver was trapped in the burning truck.

  Firefighters extricated the man from the truck and took him to LSU Hospital in Shreveport.

 The crash happened just before 3:30 p.m.  The Sheriff's Department is investigating whether the truck hydroplaned on the road.
